Harare, (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has strongly condemned the alleged assault of a tourist by one of its members in Chipinge, describing the conduct as unprofessional and contrary to policing values.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the ZRP had noted with concern a social media report alleging that a police officer had chipped a tourist in the eastern border town. Commissioner Nyathi stressed that the organization does not condone misconduct by its members under any circumstances.
“The Police Command is therefore taking action with a view of continuously giving the public quality service and diligently adhering to policing values and courtesy as outlined in the Zimbabwe Republic Police Client Service Charter,” he said.
He said professionalism, discipline and respect for members of the public, both local and foreign, remain core principles of the police service, adding that the ZRP is committed to ensuring accountability whenever allegations of misconduct arise.
Commissioner Nyathi also commended the tourist involved for promptly reporting the matter to the police, noting that such cooperation assists authorities in establishing the facts and taking appropriate action.
The incident comes at a time when Zimbabwe is intensifying efforts to promote both domestic and international tourism, particularly in regions such as Manicaland, which is home to popular attractions including the Eastern Highlands and several cultural heritage sites.
Incidents involving visitors often draw public attention, as they have the potential to damage the country’s image and the confidence of international tourists.
In recent years, the ZRP has repeatedly emphasized its zero-tolerance stance towards abuse of authority, urging officers to conduct themselves in a manner that builds public trust.
The police have also encouraged members of the public to report any cases of misconduct, assuring citizens and visitors alike that complaints will be handled transparently.
