BEITBRIDGE — At least 12 families of civil servants will soon move into brand-new duplex flats in Beitbridge town, marking a significant step forward in the government’s provision of attractive non-monetary incentives.

The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Matabeleland South, Albert Ngulube, said this development is a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to improve housing for public servants.

Minister Ngulube announced the development after the recent tour of ongoing independence legacy projects in Beitbridge. The duplex flats, being built in phases, will ultimately accommodate 64 families, with the first beneficiaries expected to occupy their homes before the commissioning scheduled for next month.

“The Duplex Flats project is part of our commitment to improving living standards for civil servants, and I am pleased with the progress so far,” he said.

Members of the Rural District Development Committee (RDDC), led by Deputy District Commissioner  Mafu, joined the minister on the tour to track progress on key initiatives, including a monument being established by the National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe at the Juliet Assembly Point in Zezani.

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is expected to light the independence flame at the site to launch the Matabeleland South roadshow. The site is historically significant as the only location in Matabeleland South where ZIPRA and ZANLA forces gathered under Commonwealth monitoring during the Lancaster House negotiations.

Other ongoing projects include the construction of science laboratories at Siyoka High School and Malala Secondary School as part of the Presidential Science Laboratories Scheme, which aims to boost STEM education across 40 schools in the province. Minister Ngulube confirmed that construction is progressing well and is on schedule.

“These projects are not just buildings; they are investments in our heritage and our future,” he said, commending the teams involved for their dedication.

With housing, education, and heritage projects moving forward simultaneously, Beitbridge is positioning itself as a hub for both community development and the preservation of Zimbabwe’s independence legacy.
