Harare, (New Ziana) – Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza on Thursday swore into office 30 newly appointed judges of the Constitutional Court, Supreme Court, High Court and Labour Court.
The appointments have resulted in a reshuffle of the superior courts, with three Supreme Court judges elevated to the Constitutional Court, while eight High Court judges have been promoted to the Supreme Court.
Speaking at swearing in ceremony held at the Constitutional Court in Harare, Gwaunza urged the newly appointed judicial officers to discharge their duties with professionalism and to uphold the highest standards of integrity.
“I would like to urge all the judges who have been sworn in to pursue integrity and excellence in the discharge of their duties. As newly appointed judicial officers, you are tasked with upholding the rule of law, ensuring timely justice delivery, and serving with absolute honesty and commitment,” she said.
She also challenged the judges to strengthen public confidence in the justice system while assisting the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) fulfil its vision of “A Zimbabwe in which world-class justice prevails.”
Justice Isaac Muzenda has been appointed Judge President of the High Court with Justice Philda Muzofa as his deputy, Justice Lillian Kudya has been appointed Senior Judge of the Labour Court while Supreme Court Judges Justices Antonia Guvava and Chinembiri Bhunu weren elevated to the Constitutional Court.
The appointments come after the removal of public interview requirements for judicial candidates, a change that gives the President greater authority in appointing judges following consultation with the Judicial Service Commission.
The latest changes mark a significant development in Judiciary, placing renewed emphasis on judicial integrity, efficient justice delivery and maintaining public trust in the Zimbabwean courts.
