Share

Harare, (New Ziana) – Police said on Monday 91 people had died on the country’s road in 1 141 accidents that happened in the last two weeks.

While the number of accidents is down from 1 605 recorded during the same period last year, the number of deaths is the same.

The number of those injured is 414, down from 621 in the same period last year.

Police spokesman, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the main causes of the accidents were speeding, recklessness and inattention.

“As we prepare for the New Year, let us be responsible and considerate on the roads,” he said.

“Drivers should safeguard lives and avoid overtaking in situations which are not conducive. They should not speed and above all, comply with set rules and regulations.”

Motorists should not get excited on highways and public service vehicles must not overload, he said.

Meanwhile, Ass Com Nyathi said the police had identified three victims of an accident that happened on December 28 in Kwekwe as Simon Mukunzwe Zimbangu, aged 53, Pamela Zimbangu and Primrose Zimbangu, all from Bulawayo.
