TWO chess players had all the reasons to walk tall after coming first at the national second leg
tournament held at Chinhoyi University of Technology on Saturday.
Tinashe Chinhanga and Linda Shaba scooped championships in the tightly
contested encounters for the male and female sections, respectively.
At the open section Chinhanga made some chocking puzzles, which even confused
his own coach, Jemusse Zhemba, who he defeated on their match against each
other during the tournament. The defeat pushed Zhemba to second position, while
Farai Hamandishe was on third position.
After all the rounds Chinhanga managed to have 6.5 points,
Shaba scooped the first position in the female section, followed by a fellow
Olympiad player Christine Makwena, while Makanaka Chiwara came third.
Shaba knows her moves and with her rapt concentration, she managed to add
another accolade to her name.
With such type of play, there is hope that this little genius will continue to amaze
and keep on adding laurels to her name.
Zimbabwe Chess Federation vice chairperson, Fortune Gandawa, said the first leg
was held in Masvingo and the CUT tournament was the second leg.
The tournament took two days, with 59 players taking part in the open section and
19 players registered in the female section.
The venue was nicely decorated and had silence as if it was an examination centre,
but it was full with players and sport administrators who were all concentrating on
the business of the day.
Even spectators supported their players in a smart way, without shouting unlike in
other indoor games like pool, where spectators would be busy shouting and
mocking opponents.
