MARONDERA- As authorities continue to urge Zimbabweans to register to vote in this year’s
harmonised elections, Chaminuka has learnt that Mashonaland East had a total of 663 294
registered voters as at January 9.
This means the province has the fourth highest number of total voter population in the country.
Zimbabwe has 5.8 million registered voters against an adult population of 8 million which is
eligible to take part in electoral processes.
However, provincial elections officer Collins Munetsi said the figure of 641 668 people was used
during the delimitation exercise.
“As at January 9, we had 663 294 registered voters in Mashonaland East province and
registration continues. We will only put the exercise to a halt two days after the President make
a proclamation of dates of this year’s harmonized polls.
“People will still have the opportunity to register for subsequent elections thereafter. We urge
people to register to vote so that they can exercise their right to elect the leaders who they
want,” he said.
Following the delimitation exercise, the province’s constituencies remained at 23 although
some were collapsed while new ones were added.
The province’s average voter population is 27 898 and is the fifth highest in the country after
Harare Metropolitan (31 745), Mashonaland West (30 058), Mashonaland Central (29 800) and
Manicaland (28 405).
