THE establishment of waste management committees and Community Based Organisations (CBOs)
in Bindura Central Business District have helped the business community in waste management.

Cheneso and Dobha Dobha CBOs have been instrumental in the reduction of waste in Bindura CBD.
According to the Communications and Publicity officer for the Environmental Management Agency
in Mashonaland Central Province, Maxwell Mupotsa, community-based groups amount to 41 in the
province.

We are talking about reducing waste at point or at source and even though we have those groups
everyone has got a part to play in terms of reducing waste within the environment.

Each and every stakeholder has got a part to play although usually the council is the one at the
forefront, said Mupotsa.

There is a lot of garbage in Bindura CBD at the moment since people are coming from the festive
season.

We are saying every individual has a part to play and right now we are in the rainy season. We are
worried about diseases like cholera and typhoid.

This gives emphasis to what the Minister for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Dr Monicah
Mavhunga, said during the clean-up campaign at Manhenga earlier this month.

She said:One of the country’s aspirations is building resilient communities in sustainable integrated
waste management systems. This therefore calls for local authorities to take the area of waste
management as an employment creation avenue for its residents by sub-contracting various waste
management activities to its youths, women and disadvantaged members of the society.

“Local business people can also be given the opportunity to transport waste to their designated
landfill from the various residential and industrial areas.

I am quite aware that this clean-up day is coming soon after the festive month of December, with a
lot of litter having been generated from the merry-making activities.
“Yes, we have mopped up this waste, but there is need for Bindura District stakeholders to take
urgent, visible and effective measures that ensure the total eradication of waste at the centre.
Waste management is a challenge that can be addressed with the involvement of everyone down to
grassroots level.

She also added that littering and waste dumping were prosecutable offences by law and members of
the public needed to act according to the current theme, which is Zero Tolerance to Litter- My
Environment, My Pride.
