Gweru (New Ziana) The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services has disbanded its based soccer outfit Whawha FC to remain with one national service team Tenax FC, which is based in Mutare.
Last season Whawha played in the rebranded Ruvimbo Funeral Central Region Soccer League.
ZPCS Midlands spokesperson Modelia Banda said players who would make the grade would be drafted into Tenax FC.
“It is true, the main reason is that they want us to have one team in the nation, which is Tenax for the ZPCS,” she said.
“We had one in Mutare and another one here, so they have decided that we have one service team so that sponsorship is not a challenge.”
She said Tenax would take the cream in the provinces to form one formidable team able to compete with the best in Zimbabwean football.
The decision to merge the clubs was announced last year by ZPCS Commissioner General Moses Chihobvu as many clubs faced administrative and funding challenges.
Banda said social soccer was still being played at the Whawha Prison Camp.
Formed in 1978, Whawha had two unsuccessful stints in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League in 2015 and 2022 under coaches Lloyd Mutasa and Luke Petros respectively.
Nicknamed “Chekerapasi” (cut it low), the team only spent one season in the topflight league during those seasons.
It however, left an indelible print in the CRSL producing players such as Albert Matewu, Roy Useni, Clifton Mwale, Raymond Horongwa, Stanley Chakwana and Gift Kwaramba among others.
Meanwhile, Tenax was also relegated from the PSL last season after having gained promotion from the Eastern Region the previous year.
