Harare (New Ziana) – A senior ZANU (PF) official has said there was no quarrel between Lusaka and Harare over the conduct and outcome of last month’s election in Zimbabwe.
There have been heated exchanges between some politicians and senior government officials from the two southern African countries following an adverse SADC election observer mission report issued by mission head, Dr Nevers Mumba of Zambia on Zimbabwe’s August 23 harmonised elections.
The report took a dim view of some aspects of the conduct of the election, a stance the government viewed as coming from, and influenced by, the opposition.
Briefing the media at the end of a Zanu PF politburo meeting, party spokesman, Christopher Mutsvangwa, said: “We also want to underscore that we have no quarrel with Zambia. Zambia is a sister Republic of Zimbabwe, we owe so much to Zambia, the people of Zambia love us, we love them, our relations will always subsist on that camaraderie, on that neighborliness, on that spirit of sacrifice which made it possible for us to get our independence, so there (there) is no particular diplomatic issue between Zimbabwe and Zambia.”
He said Mumba’s utterances would make neither Lusaka nor Harare lose sleep and expressed confidence that relations between the two countries will continue on an even keel as neighbours.
“You can choose your friends but you cannot choose your neighbours. So we will get it right, despite the Mumbas of this world,” he said.
