CHINHOYI – TWENTY councilors were sworn in on Thursday at a colourful event held
in Chinhoyi Council Chambers.
The councilors were sworn in as stated in the Urban Council’s Act Chapter 29:15, which
provides for the establishment of municipalities and towns and the administration of
municipalities, and towns by local Boards.

The new councillors took the oath of office before the Town Clerk, Maxwell Kaitano,
while a crowd of witnesses, among them members of the families of the new councillors
and party supporters.

Among the candidates who were sworn in are four CCC members – Garikai Dendera
Ward 5, Busani Dube Ward 13, Owen Charuza Ward 6 and Dyke Makumbi Ward 11,
who served as Chinhoyi Mayors before on different occasions.
Chipo Mlotshwa and Patricia Chibaya were once deputy Mayors.

Other councillors, who were also sworn in are: David Malunga from Ward 8 of CCC,
Richard Vitirinyu, Ninion Varandeni Ward 9, Lovemore Kuhwakumire Ward 10, Good
Sairos Ward 1 and Arnold Muronga from Ward 7, who is the youngest at 23 years.
Zanu PF’s two candidates, Voster Mashevedzanwa, Ward 11 and Innocent
Mangwanya, Ward 15 were councillors in the previous council and retained their wards.
Archibald Muzanenhamo of Ward 4 is an Independent candidate.

The other five candidates came through women’s quota and they are two from Zanu PF,
Mageren Chidarikire and Ruth Chikukwa, while the other three CCC women’s quota
representatives are Abigail Sauiti, Florence Masachi and Dorcas Marunga.
The new comers were very excited and some were celebrating this new milestone.
It was an occasion for mockery, as some CCC councilors shouted out Mangwanya’s
name for the Mayor’s post mocking Mashevedzanwa, who they said was also targeting
the same post.
The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works advised all councils to go through
the induction process first before they select their Mayor and Deputy.

Chinhoyi Council will have their induction over the weekend and Mayor and Deputy
Mayors will be chosen during their first council meeting.
