THE mining community and the people of Gwanda are mourning the death of a
prominent miner following last Sunday’s fatal accident.
Bongani Sibanda (37) of number 359 Seventh Avenue, Gwanda, died on the spot
after he was involved in an accident.
Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Loveness Mangena,
said the accident occurred on October 2, 2023.
“Circumstances are that Sibanda was driving his silver Mercedes Benz with one
passenger on board along Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road and while at the 36km peg, a
Fuso truck encroached onto his lane, leading to a side swipe collision.
“This side swipe collision led to the rolling of the Mercedes Benz, which resulted in
the death of Sibanda while the passenger had some minor injuries and was taken to
    United Bulawayo Hospitals.
“Sibanda, who sustained head injuries died on the spot. His body was taken to
Esigodini mortuary. However, the Fuso truck which belongs to Bakers Inn had its
window screen shattered with minor body damages while the Mercedes was a write-
    off,” said Insp. Mangena.
When news started filtering in, social media platforms were abuzz with condolences
    messages.
    Some messages read:
“On behalf of Matopo Gold Miners, we are very sorry to receive this heartfelt
condolence. May your soul rest in eternal peace our dear son?
“You left a gap that no one call fill. May the Almighty God comfort the family and
    friends?”
Another said: “Umzingwane small-scale miners’ association is deeply saddened by
the passing on our beloved brother in a tragic accident. May God give strength to
the family and Gwanda community during this time of hardship? MHSRIP.”

“Deepest condolences from Zibagwe mine workers and management. MHSRIP.”
