ZOC in Women in Sport empowerment drive.

The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee is making strides in making sure that women are
empowered and uplifted in terms of development in sport.
The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee is an organisation inspired by the time-less power of sport to
create a universal language that promotes peace and unity.
ZOC’s programmes officer Newman Gomendo told Indonsakusa recently that the organisation
was on a national drive to train women in sports in all districts around the country.

“We need to capacitate our women and uplift them in terms of raising the bar when it comes to
women in sports nationwide highlighting issues to do with sexual abuse and match fixing,” he
said.
So far ZOC has held training sessions at Nyika rural centre in Bikita in Masvingo. While it is
concentrating on women, men are not being excluded in the exercise.
Participation by women in sport is improving, but more still needs to be done especially at
grassroots level.
“Of Course women are being empowered in Zimbabwe, but it’s not enough; we need to
encourage women to be put in leadership positions in their respective sporting federations,” he
added.
