REDCLIFF-based Zimbabwe Premier League womens volleyball club Diamonds will this weekend
host a national open tournament at Zisco Club.
Club spokesperson Nyaradzo Makuyana said the tournament is meant to promote volleyball among
women who are usually sidelined and to people in the Midlands Province.
Makuyana said more than 16 teams from around the country had confirmed their participation.
“We will have teams from as far as Beitbridge, Bindura, Gweru, Harare, Kwekwe and other cities. It is
an open tournament and we expect both women's and men’s teams,” she said.
Makuyana said volleyball was not popular in the province due to lack of sponsorship and the
tournament is a way of promoting the sport.
“It is unfortunate that games are usually played in Harare and we hope that if we get more sponsors
the game will become more popular,” she said.
The team’s secretary Rudo Charuma said a number of sponsors had come on board and teams stand
to win cash prizes, trophies and medals.
Charuma said although they had organised such a tournament before, it was through assistance
    from the Midlands Volleyball Association.
She said they look forward to hosting the tournament annually and plan to also introduce the beach
format of the game in the future.
Established 2009, Diamonds Ladies Volleyball Club currently plays in the Zimbabwe Women’s
Premier League and has Patricia Muzokomba and Jessica Makuyana in the Zimbabwe National team
    set up.
