Harare, (New Ziana) – The Ministry of Information
Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services on Tuesday donated
20 laptops to the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium
Enterprises Development to help it digitise and modernise some of its
services.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises
Development, Monica Mutsvangwa said the computers will go a long way in
transforming the ministry, allow it embrace the digital world and
modernize services that were currently offered manually.
She said the laptops would be distributed to some of the Ministry’s 63
district development officers, and expected this to enhance their work,
which include data collection, processing and transmission.
“In terms of women empowerment, we have a number of interventions we
need to do including bringing up children in a violent free family, and
empowering families who eventually make a nation. In terms of empowering
women, we come through a number of interventions which include reducing
gender based violence, child marriages, creating dialogue and collecting
data as events unfold,” she said.
“Women Affairs is one of the biggest ministries as it has structures
that go to the ward level. We have ward development coordinators,
district development coordinators and provincial development
coordinators up to the national development coordinators. What they need
are computers and this enables the thrust of President Emmerson
Mnangagwa of not leaving anyone behind, to be achieved,” Mutsvangwa
said.
On her part, the Minister of Information Communication Technology,
Postal and Couries Services, Tatenda Mavetera, said her Ministry was
working with other ministries to digitally capacitate them, and increase
the digital footprint in government and the country as a whole.
She said capacitating women was important as demographically they
constituted 52 percent of the population in the country.
“The capacity women need is not only to do with providing for us, but to
equip them with digital skills. We should make sure that we have a
mobile digital skills program that we can be able to give women in
Zimbabwe. We want all the mothers to learn to operate a computer. The
mandate is to digitize or modernize,” she said.
