A 10-man gang of robbers pounced on Lomagundi College near Chinhoyi on Tuesday evening, and stole cash, a pistol, a vehicle and other valuables, police have said.
In a post on X, police said the robbers raided the school’s finance department and the principal’s office, assaulting guards and the deputy principal in the process, and made away with an undisclosed amount of money, and other school valuables.
In the finance department offices, the robbers blew up a safe but found it empty, after which they proceeded to the principal’s office where cash was stolen.
The amount of money stolen is unknown, but could be substantial as the robbery was on the opening day of schools when they collected term fees from parents.
Police said a manhunt had since been launched for the robbers, who used a school vehicle to escape.
In recent months, the country has been hit by a spate of robberies, some armed, in which millions in cash and other valuables have been stolen.
Most often the robbers target homes and business premises where lots of cash is known to be kept.
