CHIREDZI – THE Chiredzi Rural District Council (CRDC) has taken a significant step towards enhancing fire safety and road rehabilitation in the district with the recent acquisition of a Belarusian Fire Tender and road construction machinery.

This initiative aims to effectively combat the rampant veld fires and improve infrastructure across the 32 wards under CRDC’s jurisdiction.

During a commissioning ceremony held at the CRDC Head Offices, Council chairperson Aspect Mashingaidze emphasised the urgency of addressing fire hazards in the district, particularly during the sugarcane harvest season.

“Our farming community faces grave risks from uncontrolled fires, especially when sugarcane is burnt. This fire tender will be a critical asset in our fight against such hazards,” he explained.

The new equipment, which includes motorised graders and tippers, is set to play a vital role in the rehabilitation of over 800 kilometres of roads, particularly in areas like the Sango Border Post.

Councillor Mashingaidze highlighted that improved road conditions would not only facilitate transportation, but would also enhance accessibility for emergency services during fire outbreaks.

The Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, who graced the event, reiterated the Government’s commitment to providing fire tenders to local authorities nationwide. “These fire tenders are essential in combating the spread of fires, and we are committed to training operators to maximise their effectiveness,” Garwe said.

The CRDC’s jurisdiction is not only home to agricultural activities but also hosts several National Heritage sites, including game parks and conservancies. The new fire tender will be instrumental in protecting these areas from veld fires that often originate from neighbouring farming communities. The Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Park, which includes parts of South Africa and Mozambique, underscores the importance of fire management in preserving biodiversity and natural resources.

With the acquisition of this equipment, CRDC is poised to enhance the safety and well-being of its residents while safeguarding the environment. The council is optimistic that these developments will foster a more resilient and thriving community, ensuring that both agriculture and wildlife can coexist harmoniously.

As the District prepares to implement these changes, the collaboration between local authorities and Government will play a crucial role in mitigating fire risks and improving infrastructure for the benefit of all 32 wards in Chiredzi.
