BINDURA University of Science Education (BUSE) held its fourth Vice Chancellor’s golf tournament, to raise funds for its sporting academy.

The Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Simelizezwe Sibanda, commended BUSE for recognising and supporting athletes at their institution.

“Today’s golf saw a collective effort from all stakeholders, joining hands for a noble cause of supporting athletes,” he said.

Sibanda said there was need for other universities and tertiary institutions to nurture talent as it is not just a sport but a source of livelihood for some.

“Sport is not a way of exercising but a way to gain economic opportunities. There is need for a shift from treating talent as a side shore and commercialising it,” he said.

Sibanda also said with adequate resources, Zimbabwe had the potential to produce international athletes which could only be achieved with the support and co-operation of all stakeholders,” he said.

He said the Government is fully committed to supporting sports persons to their full potential.

The Vice Chancellor for BUSE, Professor Eddy Mwenje, said the funds channelled towards the sports academy would help eradicate poverty among talented athletes.

“The funds that are going to come out of this tournament are not only going to support sports at the institution but also do away with poverty among talented athletes, which is a major barrier to committing their full potential towards sports,” he said.

The golf chairperson of the tournament, Desmond Ali, said there was need for the corporate world to invest in sporting facilities in order to have more athletes on the international arena.

“There is need to invest in sporting facilities in the country in order to yield fruitful results in the sporting arena,” he said.

The golf tournament saw institutions from different parts of the country coming together at the ZRP golf club in support of BUSE.
