Harare , (New Ziana) -The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has summoned troubled Kwekwe United FC to a disciplinary hearing after failing to fulfill their scheduled fixture against Herentals FC on Monday.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, PSL communications and media liaison officer Kudzai Bare said Kwekwe United is being charged for breaching Order 31 of the PSL Rules and Regulations.

“Kwekwe United has been charged with breaching Order 31. It is an act of misconduct where it fails to fulfill a fixture or behaves in a manner which brings the league or any of its sponsors into disrepute,” she said.

Specifically, the club is accused of misconduct under provisions 31.1.8 and 31.2.17 for failing to fulfill a fixture and for conduct that brings the league or its sponsors into disrepute or endangers the welfare of the league.

On Monday, the team did not show up for their scheduled home match against Herentals at Bata Stadium.

According to recent media reports, the team players are protesting over unpaid salaries and have reportedly gone three months without pay.

Due to the financial crisis, players have also been skipping training sessions. Kwekwe United is a newly promoted side in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, having earned promotion last year from the Central Region Division One.

Their start to top-flight football has been difficult as they currently sit 16th on the league table with 6 matches played, and with the latest fixture unfulfilled, they remain rooted in the relegation zone while other teams have reached matchday 7.

Club chairman, Francis Tavagadza, recently announced that Kwekwe United needs around $35 000 to $40 000 per month to operate under current conditions and appealed to sponsors for assistance.

The disciplinary hearing is set to take place on May 5 this year at the PSL offices.
