Bulawayo, (New Ziana)- Zimbabwe has won the bid to host the World Street Children Cricket Tournament (SCCWC) in the city of Bulawayo in 2027, an official has said.

Bulawayo mayor David Coltart made the announcement during a stakeholder engagement meeting held at the Council Chambers on Monday.

The Street Child Cricket World Cup (SCCWC) is an annual event organized by Street Child United and Save the Children, aimed at giving street-connected children from around the world a platform to showcase their skills and advocate for their rights.

Coltart confirmed that the tournament will coincide with the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, which is set to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October and November 2027.

The last World Street Children Cricket tournament was held in 2023 in Chennai, India, bringing together 22 teams from 16 countries.

Beyond cricket, the event featured a festival of arts and a congress on street children’s rights, emphasizing the need for access to basic services and fundamental rights for vulnerable youth.

“We have been meeting the organisers of the Street Child Cricket World Cup. We were lobbying with cricket associations for Bulawayo to be the host city for the event in 2027,” said Coltart.

“I was advised yesterday that we have been successful and our city will in fact host that tournament on the sidelines of the World Cup tournament,” said Coltart.

The SCCWC is a valuable initiative that provides a sporting platform for street-connected children and raises awareness about their challenges and needs, as reported by several sources like LEEDO Street Children.
