Harare, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called on ZANU PF leadership and members to intensify efforts in implementing party programmes and upholding the party’s revolutionary ideals, as Zimbabwe prepares to commemorate Heroes and Defence Forces Day.

Speaking ahead of the Politburo session convened in the capital on Wednesday, President Mnangagwa urged all party structures to remain steadfast in delivering on the mandate bestowed upon them by the people of Zimbabwe. He emphasised that the momentum built through recent victories and ongoing development projects must not be lost.

“This session comes at a time when the nation is preparing to honour the heroes and heroines who sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom and democracy we enjoy today. We must sustain the momentum and timeously implement the outcomes of our meetings. The people of our great motherland expect no less,” he said

He said the Politburo was expected to receive updates on preparations for the National People’s Conference, Heroes Day, Defence Forces Day and other matters of party and national interest.

President Mnangagwa lauded ZANU PF’s electoral performance, singling out the recent by-election victories in Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East and Masvingo Provinces as signs of continued public confidence in the ruling party.

“We honour the people who continue to trust ZANU PF with their hopes and aspirations. These victories must not be taken lightly—they must be consolidated through stronger grassroots mobilisation and service delivery,” he said.

He reaffirmed the party’s ideological foundation and mass-based nature, describing the party as a “towering revolutionary party” with deep and expanding roots across rural and urban Zimbabwe.

He called on the party to sharpen its mobilisation tactics, strengthen internal unity, and focus on delivering tangible development outcomes.

“There is no room for complacency. Our programmes must be people-centred, from social services and infrastructure to household income and economic empowerment,” President Mnangagwa said.

Highlighting government initiatives, he noted significant progress in the energy, transport, water and agriculture sectors and urged party departments to quantify and report, ward by ward, the real impact of projects, saying the time had come for data-driven accountability.

He pointed to recent milestones, including the commissioning of the expanded ZIMPLATS smelter and the 35-Megawatt energy plant as models of industrial self-reliance and beneficiation. He also commended preparations already underway for the 2025/26 summer cropping season.

“Let us organise communities, village by village, to consolidate the agricultural improvements we have achieved,” he said.

On road safety, President Mnangagwa expressed concern over rising cases of reckless driving, saying law enforcement agencies had been instructed to intensify crackdowns on rogue drivers. However, he said responsibility ultimately lies with every road user.

“Discipline, patience and soberness must become the hallmark of Zimbabwean society. Bad behaviour on our roads or anywhere else is unacceptable. The law will take its course,” said President Mnangagwa.

He also gave a brief on his recent engagements with leaders from Equatorial Guinea, Japan, and Algeria, as well as Zimbabwe’s participation in the Summit of Liberation Movements in South Africa. He said Zimbabwe must remain vigilant and united in advancing shared interests on the global stage.

“The world is changing. Our strategies must evolve, especially among the youth. But we must never compromise our Constitution, values, and revolutionary principles,” he said.

President Mnangagwa also underscored the need for ZANU PF to retain power not as an end, but as a means to continue the liberation legacy and fulfil the aspirations of the people.

“We owe it to our fallen heroes and heroines, and to the founding fathers of our Party and country. We must never be lethargic in our sacred duty. Forward ever, backward never,” said President Mnangagwa.
