Harare, (New Ziana) – Developing necessary regulatory frameworks and continuously improving access to reliable and affordable internet service is a priority of government, President Mnangagwa has said.
President Mnangagwa made the remarks at the launch of the High-Performance Computing Phase-2 (HPC-2) at the University of Zimbabwe.
The launch of the HPC-2 precedes HPC 1, which was launched in 2015 and is a transformative milestone, placing Zimbabwe at the African continent’s technological and scientific revolution.
“The Government will continuously develop regulatory frameworks that ensure that people have access to affordable and reliable network at all times. The commissioning of the second phase of the HPC-2 underlines the Second Republic’s commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to drive research, computing innovation, and multi-sectoral development.
“It is already powering projects that include Smart Policing, the Impilo Electronic Health Records system, digitisation of indigenous languages, and climate modelling. This facility will also support research in artificial intelligence, big data analytics, cloud computing, cyber security, renewable energy, agriculture, mining, tourism modernisation, medical training and robotics,” he said.
President Mnangagwa challenged private sector players, industry and commerce to partner Government in the advancement of innovation and scientific evolution, as this leads to improved economic output.
He said: “Science and technology is the way to go, hence I implore the private sector to collaborate with the Government to advance our modernisation and industrialisation drive as this leads to increased production of goods and services.
“The future of Zimbabwe can only be built through science and technology development. In light of this, the Second Republic introduced the Heritage-Based Education 5.0 model, with a specific emphasis on Science and Technology Innovation, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), to ensure that our education becomes relevant in line with the ever-changing environment. This is leapfrogging the industrialization of our great motherland, Zimbabwe, and is resulting in the production of more domestic goods and services.”
Courtesy of the HPC-2, President Mnangagwa added, computational science is now indispensable to solving complex problems in every sector, from traditional science and engineering domains to key areas such as national security, public health, and economic innovation.
He challenged the Zimbabwe Centre for High Performance to put extra effort in ensuring that people understand the technology, including increasing awareness of HPC implementation by academics.
The project is a result of the cordial relations between Zimbabwe and the People’s Republic of China, whose Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, said the east Asian country is committed to playing its role in strengthening Zimbabwe’s ICT infrastructure and innovation capabilities.
