Zim govt satisfied with progress on Harare-Kanyemba road dualization project

Harare, (New Ziana) -The dualisation of the Harare-Kanyemba highway is a milestone towards the aspirations of Zimbabwe to become an upper middle income society by 2030, a senior official has said.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Joshua Sacco said this on Tuesday after touring the Mazoe Road dualisation project where he officially opened a 3 kilometre stretch of the upgraded highway.

Kanyemba is a border town on the Zambezi River where Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique meet just upstream of Lake Cabora Bassa.

The project, being implemented under a Public-Private Partnership with local consortium Exodus and Company, seeks to transform the Harare-Kanyemba corridor into a modern dual carriageway.

Work commenced in February last year, and significant progress has been made, with a section from the New Parliament building in Mount Hampden already open to traffic.

By December this year, the Mazoe section of the road is expected to be fully complete, with the long-term plan of extending the dualisation to the Kanyemba border post near Zambia.

Sacco underscored the importance of infrastructure in driving socio-economic growth.

“It is difficult to attain Vision 2030 without infrastructure and improved economic opportunities. The Second Republic is prioritizing infrastructure development, particularly in marginalized areas, as this is the bedrock of economic transformation,” he said.

The dualised Harare-Kanyemba road is expected to cut travel time from Harare to Mazoe by 50 percent, while also reducing accidents along the busy stretch.

Beyond easing mobility, Sacco noted, the corridor is critical in enhancing trade.

“This road positions Zimbabwe as a vital transport hub and provides a shorter route to Zambia. It also ensures the safe passage of agricultural products to and from Mbire, Mount Darwin and Muzarabani,” he added.

Sacco commended Exodus and Company for the pace and quality of work delivered so far.

“Our contractor has done extremely well. Their speed has not compromised quality, as we can all see, and I would like to applaud them for that,” he said.

Sacco also paid tribute to the various stakeholders contributing to the success of the project.

“I urge all our partners to maintain their support towards this important development, which is not only transforming our transport system but also stimulating wider economic activity,” he said.

The Harare-Kanyemba dualisation project is part of a broader national infrastructure drive under the Second Republic aimed at modernizing the road network in the country, improving connectivity, and unlocking opportunities for rural and urban communities alike.
