Two robbery suspects arrested after dramatic high-speed chase in Chegutu

Harare,  (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of two suspects following a shooting incident in Chegutu, Mashonaland Central province, which brought a violent robbery spree to an abrupt end.

Police national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the suspects, identified as Valentine Dipuka (30) and Tinashe Chimukono, were nabbed after a high-speed chase through Chegutu Central Business District on Friday.

A third suspect, Tafadzwa Mumba, succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained during the pursuit. The arrests are linked to a robbery that took place on Sunday last week at Newfound Turn-off, Gadzema, along the Chegutu–Chinhoyi Road.

According to police reports, the suspects, driving a Honda Fit, allegedly rammed into a Nissan Caravan kombi before threatening the driver with machetes and making off with US$266. “On receiving information about the suspects’ whereabouts, police tracked them to Chegutu Central Business District, where they attempted to flee.

A high-speed chase ensued, prompting officers to fire warning shots before disabling the suspects’ vehicle,” Comm Nyathi said. He also sternly warned criminal syndicates against resisting arrest or confronting specialised police crack teams, stressing that law enforcement will respond decisively to such threats.

“It is in the interest of law and order for suspects to cooperate with law enforcement officers during arrests and scene attendance. The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that there is no going back in the fight against crime,” he said.

Comm Nyathi urged members of the public to continue playing their part by reporting suspicious activities to the National Complaints Desk or their nearest police station.
