KWEKWE – The Member of Parliament for Mbizo Constituency, Corban Madzivanyika has called for the urgent establishment of a drug rehabilitation centre in Mbizo to address the escalating problem of substance abuse among the youth.
The MP emphasised that drug addiction is not just a personal issue but a community crisis that requires comprehensive intervention.
“Our youth are battling substance abuse that threatens their future and the well-being of families. A local rehabilitation centre will provide the necessary support for recovery and help reintegrate affected individuals back into society,” he said.
The MP highlighted that current facilities are often located far from Mbizo, making it difficult for families to access timely treatment.
Madzivanyika stressed the importance of a centre equipped with professional counsellors, medical staff, and rehabilitation programmes tailored to the needs of local youth.
The legislator sounded the alarm over the rising challenge of drug abuse among the youth in Mbizo, calling it a serious threat to the community’s social fabric and future development.
The MP has described drug and substance abuse as a growing concern affecting young people, leading to increased crimes, school dropouts, and deteriorating family relationships.
“Our youth are our future, but drug abuse is robbing them of opportunities and hope. It’s devastating families and turning vibrant communities into areas of fear and despair,” he said.
Madzivanyika cited common substances abused, including mutoriro, twumbwa, and illicit drugs, amongst others, noting that poverty, unemployment, and lack of recreational activities have contributed to the problem.
To address this challenge, the MP outlined several ongoing and planned initiatives that include youth empowerment programmes, vocational training and skills development workshops aimed at engaging young people in productive activities and community awareness campaigns.
Madzivanyika called for collaborations between local leaders, churches and schools to educate families on the dangers of drug abuse and promote healthy lifestyles.
He called for strengthening of law enforcement, working with police to crack down on drug peddling hotspots and the establishment of Youth Centres.
“We need safe spaces where youth can access counselling, mentorship, and recreational facilities,” said the MP for Mbizo.
“This is not just a government issue; it’s a collective responsibility. We must all stand united to save our children from the scourge of drugs.”
