BIKITA — The fight against drug and substance abuse is intensifying across Masvingo Province, with alarmingly high statistics showing the urgency of the crisis. Recent reports indicate a staggering increase in cases, significantly affecting youth and school-going children.

According to the latest figures from the Provincial Health Office, Masvingo Province records approximately 5000 cases of substance abuse annually, marking a 25% increase from the previous
    year.

Masvingo District has recorded 1500 cases, followed by Bikita District with 1200 cases, Chivi District (800 cases), Gutu District (700 cases), Zaka District (600 cases), Mwenezi District (200 cases) and Chiredzi District (100 cases).

The statistics reflect a troubling trend, particularly among school-age children, with over 40% of reported cases involving individuals between the ages of 13 and 19.

In response to the escalating situation, community leaders and civil society groups are mobilising to tackle the crisis. The recent awareness campaign in Bikita District attracted hundreds of participants, emphasising collective action among parents, educators, and law enforcement.

Key voices at the event underscored the importance of community vigilance. Anesu Mupuwi, a student at Bikita High School, said, “Many of my friends are affected by drugs. We need more support and education about the dangers they pose.” Local leaders are advocating for robust measures against drug suppliers and calling for cooperation across various sectors. Chief Marozva remarked, “Our children deserve a future free from the chains of addiction. We must
    work together.”

The Government has pledged to combat this growing menace through targeted interventions, including the establishment of rehabilitation centers in each district, aimed at providing support for
those struggling with addiction. The Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Ezra Chadzamira, said there was a need for community solidarity, in the fight against drug abuse.

“The fight against drug and substance abuse is everyone’s responsibility. We need a unified approach to safeguard our youth and build stronger futures,” he said. With ongoing campaigns and government initiatives, the hope is that communities will unite to combat drug and substance abuse effectively. The health and future of Masvingo’s youth depend on collective action and continued vigilance against this pervasive threat.
