Harare, (New Ziana)- Three City of Harare employees died on Wednesday in a workplace accident at the Morton Jaffray Water Works near Norton, the council has confirmed.

In a statement, the city council said the trio had entered a decommissioned water clarifier “when tragedy struck ” on Wednesday.

Two of the workers died at the scene while the third was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

“The City of Harare regrets to inform residents of the unfortunate death of three employees at our Morton Jaffray Water Works near Norton. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones affected by this devastating loss,” it said.

Council however did not give further details on the cause of death saying an investigation was underway.

The incident comes months after two others council workers died at the city of Harare water works in Glenview, in what was suspected exposure to hydrogen sulfide – a highly poisonous gas.

There have also been accusations against the local authority for failing to protect its workers by providing essentials.
