Harare, (New Ziana) – Police have expressed deep concern over a disturbing rise in fatal incidents linked to petty disputes at beer outlets across the country, urging people to exercise restraint and resolve conflicts peacefully.
Police spokesperson, Paul Nyathi said the trend, observed in various provinces this month, shows how minor misunderstandings fueled by alcohol are escalating into deadly, fatal confrontations.
The most recent incidents reported include a Beitbridge tragedy on 1 December 2025 where Taurai Hungwe (29) was fatally attacked following a dispute at a night spot. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.
At Fort Rixon on 4 December, Kudakwashe Mudyanewana (27) allegedly suffered fatal injuries after being struck during an altercation at a bottle store in Claremont Business Centre. The suspects are yet to be arrested.
At Chibhawabhawa on 5 December, Leonard Chimhondo (45) died after he was attacked at his home by two unidentified assailants. Police suspect the attack stemmed from disagreements with acquaintances.
In Bulawayo, in a revenge incident on 7 December, Mqondisi Godowns Dube (26) lost his life after a confrontation in Magwegwe North. Police believe the attack was linked to a previous misunderstanding involving friends.
Nyathi said investigations are underway in all cases, with officers intensifying efforts to track down outstanding suspects.
He stressed the need for responsible behaviour and tolerance in social settings to curb unnecessary loss of life.
“We urge members of the public to value the sanctity of life and avoid violent conduct, especially over minor issues,” Nyathi said.
He called on communities to assist with information that may aid ongoing investigations into the cases, adding that collaborative action is key to preventing further tragedies.
