GWANDA – The government will fast-track the release of US$3 million to complete the Gwanda Court Complex, aiming to enhance access to justice for citizens.

Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube announced this during a visit to Gwanda Magistrates’ Court last Saturday.

The Gwanda Court Complex, now about 60 percent complete, is set to house Zimbabwe’s sixth High Court when finished in October next year.

Construction began in June 2004 but stalled for years due to funding shortages. Work resumed in 2019 after the advent of the Second Republic.

During a recent project tour, Prof Ncube emphasised the importance of an effective justice system for national development and urged the speedy completion of the court complex.

“The judicial system is a key pillar of our development agenda. Under the National Development Strategy (NDS2), we are committed to building an effective justice system,” he said.

“The Gwanda Court Complex is central to this goal. With proper facilities, we can attract the necessary personnel, as the complex will house both lower courts and the High Court.”

He added, “The structure is now 60 percent complete. Of the more than US$10 million required, US$7 million has already been released. Treasury will provide the remaining US$3 million to finish the project by year-end.”

“Local government has confirmed that funding is on track and all remaining materials for roofing and electrical equipment are ready for installation.”

The Gwanda Magistrates’ Court, built on a prominent hillside, will offer panoramic views of Gwanda and Jahunda. According to the Finance Minister, the modern infrastructure will create a valued environment for justice officials and enhance the town’s appeal.
