Harare, (New Ziana) – In recent years, the Glen View Area 8 Furniture Complex has been plagued by recurring fire outbreaks that have destroyed property, disrupted livelihoods, and left many artisans counting losses.

The fires, often attributed to unsafe electrical connections, poor handling of flammable materials, and a lack of proper safety measures, have raised serious concerns among workers and authorities.

In response to these devastating incidents, management at the complex has introduced a series of safety measures aimed at reducing the risk of fire and improving overall working conditions.

Security personnel are now deployed daily, operating both in the morning and evening, to monitor activities and ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.

Brighton Chitauro, a security officer at the complex, said the new measures have already begun to transform operations and improve safety awareness among workers.

“All the work conducted in the complex is closely monitored to maintain order and ensure compliance with rules and regulations, thereby providing a safe working environment,” he said.

He added that security personnel have undergone training from fire brigade services, equipping them with the necessary skills to respond effectively to fire outbreaks and prevent potential hazards before they escalate.

The furniture complex, known for housing a variety of small-scale industries including carpentry, welding, and food vending, has introduced strict operational guidelines.

According to Chitauro, activities are now strictly monitored, with high-risk operations such as welding receiving close supervision.

Canteen operators have also come under scrutiny, with emphasis placed on hygiene and safe handling of gas equipment. Workers are required to wear protective clothing, including aprons, and ensure that gas cylinders are properly secured to prevent explosions.

“We are ensuring that those operating in canteens maintain hygiene standards and properly secure their gas equipment, as these can easily trigger fire outbreaks if not handled carefully,” Chitauro explained.

In addition to regulating daily operations, the complex has strengthened its cleanliness standards. Workspaces are now required to be cleaned daily, reducing the accumulation of flammable waste materials such as wood shavings and sawdust.

A partnership with Geo Pomona has also been established for the regular collection and disposal of litter every Monday.

“Security operations have been enhanced through the introduction of shift systems, ensuring 24-hour surveillance within the complex. Guards alternate between day and night duties to prevent fatigue and improve efficiency.

“We have introduced shifts for our internal security guards to ensure continuous monitoring. This helps reduce cases of theft and vandalism, while also improving our response to emergencies,” Chitauro said.

He added that efforts are also underway to address one of the major causes of fires—faulty electrical systems. Exposed wires are being replaced, and proper electrical installations are being implemented to minimize risks.

Furthermore, fire safety infrastructure has been installed across the complex, including water points and hosepipes that are readily available in case of emergencies.

“We have installed fire points with water and hosepipes to ensure a quick response whenever a fire breaks out. Each workspace is required to have fire extinguishers to enable immediate action during emergencies,” he said.

These combined efforts are expected to significantly reduce the frequency and impact of fire incidents, bringing much-needed relief to workers at the Glen View Area 8 furniture complex.
