HARARE — A sombre atmosphere engulfed Doves Funeral Services on Sunday as mourners gathered for a mass memorial service and repatriation ceremony for victims of Tuesday’s devastating Harare–Nyamapanda bus crash that claimed 17 lives.

The emotional ceremony brought together grieving families, Government officials, diplomats, church leaders and members of the Malawian community living in Zimbabwe, all united in mourning the lives lost in one of the country’s deadliest recent road accidents. Most of the victims were Malawian nationals travelling from Cape Town, South Africa, to Malawi when the BRD Luxury Coach was involved in a horrific crash near Suswe along the Harare–Nyamapanda highway. The impact of the collision left passengers trapped in twisted wreckage, while emergency responders and local residents worked tirelessly to rescue survivors and recover bodies.

During the memorial service, hymns, prayers and messages of comfort filled the funeral parlour as rows of coffins lay before mourners preparing for the final journey to Malawi. Emotional scenes unfolded as relatives wept openly, some collapsing in grief while paying their last respects to loved ones lost far from home.Zimbabwe’s Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe, was officiated as Guest of Honour at the service, which also drew officials from the Malawian Embassy in Zimbabwe who coordinated repatriation logistics and documentation.

Fourteen of the victims’ bodies were scheduled to be transported to Malawi for burial, while funeral arrangements for other victims were being handled separately. The driver of the BRD Luxury Coach has already been laid to rest at his rural home in Mutoko.Relatives described the deceased as hardworking individuals, many of whom were involved in cross-border trading and informal business activities between South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Some had reportedly been travelling home after visiting relatives and conducting business in the region.

The tragedy has once again raised alarm over road safety along Zimbabwe’s major highways, especially routes heavily used by cross-border transport operators. Concerns continue to mount over speeding, driver fatigue, vehicle roadworthiness and the long hours endured by public transport crews travelling across Southern Africa.

Authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal crash, although preliminary indications suggest human error and fatigue could have contributed to the disaster.
As the convoy carrying the bodies prepared to leave Harare under police escort, mourners continued singing and praying, bringing a deeply emotional close to a tragedy that has left communities in both Zimbabwe and Malawi in mourning.
