Harare, (New Ziana) – The Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Edgar Moyo, on Monday reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to addressing the complex challenge of drug and substance abuse.

Speaking at a press conference in Harare, Moyo said the Government is strengthening community reintegration and psychological support through a comprehensive, people-centred approach that prioritises recovery, dignity, and social inclusion for victims.

“The Government will continue to strengthen community-based rehabilitation models and expand psychological support services in collaboration with civil society, faith-based organisations, the private sector, and local communities.

“This holistic approach embeds sustainable social protection and creates pathways to decent work for rehabilitated individuals, ensuring recovery is not only dignified but also productive, thereby fostering stronger families, resilient communities, and a healthier nation,” he said.

Moyo said that during the first quarter of 2026, 382 individuals were successfully reintegrated into their families and communities following treatment and rehabilitation, underscoring the importance of structured reintegration systems that sustain recovery and reduce relapse.

A total of 688 parenting groups remain functional nationwide, with an additional 48 groups established during the quarter.

“These groups are instrumental in fostering resilience, strengthening positive parenting, and creating supportive environments for long-term recovery,” said Moyo.

Through collaboration with partners such as Mubatirapamwe, Connect, and Zimbabwe Civil Liberties and Drug Network, the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare reached 995 clients, highlighting a surge in demand for psychological support services.

In March, Mubatirapamwe convened its inaugural caregiver support meeting attended by 150 caregivers alongside representatives from the National Technical Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse.

“This milestone initiative recognised the burden carried by caregivers and created safe spaces for shared experiences, emotional healing, and capacity building,” Moyo said.

He added that these achievements demonstrate the critical role of community reintegration services in bridging the gap between treatment and full participation in society.
