Harare,— The Zimbabwe National Army has announced the death of retired Brigadier-General Donald Silundi Tshuma, a senior former military officer and veteran of the liberation struggle, whose Chimurenga name was Henry Silundi.
He was 71.
In a statement, the army said that Brig-Gen Tshuma died on May 15, 2026, at his home in Nkulumane 12, Bulawayo.
Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Hlengiwe Dube said Commander Zimbabwe National Army Lieutenant-General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi had conveyed his condolences following the death of the retired officer.
“The Commander Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant-General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi, is saddened to announce the untimely death of Brigadier General (Retired) Donald Silundi Tshuma.
“Brigadier-General (Retired) Donald Silundi Tshuma, whose Chimurenga name was ‘Henry Silundi’, passed away on May 15, 2026, at his residential home at 14010 Nkulumane 12, Bulawayo,” she said.
Brig-Gen Tshuma is remembered for his contribution to Zimbabwe’s liberation war and for his later service in the country’s armed forces after independence.
Following the liberation struggle, many former fighters became part of the foundation of the national army, taking up important responsibilities in defence, national security and the development of military institutions.
Although the army did not immediately provide a detailed account of Brig-Gen Tshuma’s wartime operations or military career, fellow veterans and associates described him as a committed and disciplined cadre who devoted his life to serving the nation.
His passing comes as Zimbabwe continues to recognise and honour liberation war veterans whose sacrifices contributed to the country attaining independence in 1980.
Family members, friends and mourners have gathered at the Tshuma residence in Nkulumane, Bulawayo, following news of his death.
Colonel Dube said funeral and burial arrangements would be communicated in due course.
