Harare, (New Ziana) – Residents of Kazangarare in Mashonaland West are living in fear following attacks by a marauding lion that has killed two men in the area within the past month.
Villagers who spoke to New Ziana at Kazangarare Business Centre said movement at night has become extremely dangerous, with many people now avoiding travelling after sunset for fear of being attacked by the predator.
One villager, identified only as Tsandukwa, said the lion first struck when a local man ventured into the Munikwa Mountains in search of gold.
“Last month, a local villager who strayed into Munikwa Mountains prospecting for gold was attacked and killed by the predator. Only his head was recovered the following day,” he said.
The attacks have reportedly changed daily life in the community, with residents rushing home early in the evening to avoid encountering the animal.
“People are no longer staying out late. Even those drinking at business centre bars now leave before sunset because everyone is afraid of the lion,” said Tsandukwa.
Another villager, Peter Maburutse, said a second fatal attack occurred soon after the first incident.
“Headman Chikede’s son-in-law was also attacked by a lion last month. He was rescued by fellow villagers who rushed him to Dete Clinic, but he was pronounced dead on arrival,” said Maburutse.
Residents are now appealing to wildlife authorities to urgently intervene and track down the lion before more lives are lost.
