Yesteryear Afro-fusion musician Changa Nyamatsatse, popularly known for his hit song Memo, is reportedly battling severe hardships and is now appealing for assistance from well-wishers after falling on difficult times.
Born Tichatonga Maxwell Chikoore, the once-celebrated singer is said to be homeless and struggling to survive years after returning to Zimbabwe from Europe, where he once performed in countries such as Austria, Germany and the Netherlands during the peak of his music career.
Recent reports indicate that Changa has become a familiar face in Gweru, where he is often seen playing his guitar in public spaces in exchange for small donations from passersby. When New ZIANA recently interacted with him, the musician opened up about his struggles, revealing that life dramatically changed after he was evicted from his family home in Marondera following disputes with his stepmother.
“I never imagined that my life would turn out like this. Right now I do not even have a place to call home, but I still believe God will make a way for me again,” said Changa. The Memo hitmaker reportedly said he is currently surviving on food handouts from friends and sympathisers while moving from place to place without a permanent home.
“Music is still in my heart and I still dream of getting back on stage someday. I just need people to help me stand again,” he added.
Changa also revealed that he has lost contact with his children who are believed to be living in Europe, adding that he no longer owns a cellphone and has no stable accommodation.
Despite his situation, the veteran musician reportedly maintains hope of rebuilding his life and reviving his music career. He has since appealed to fellow musicians, fans and well-wishers to assist him with accommodation, food and other basic needs as he tries to get back on his feet.
Changa’s situation has once again highlighted the struggles faced by some Zimbabwean musicians after their time in the spotlight, with several former stars having publicly appealed for assistance in recent years
