In the heart of Old Naledi, popularly known as Zola, an unusual conversation is slowly finding its way to dinner tables donkey meat!
At Motse wa Tonki, a local establishment founded by Nthusi Gabo, interest in donkey meat has grown noticeably since the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), which has affected cattle movement and beef supply in parts of the country.
Speaking in an interview, Gabo says the business has seen a rise in customers who are now exploring alternative sources of meat.
“We have seen an increase in the number of customers since the FMD outbreak. Some people come out of curiosity, while others are looking for alternative meat options due to availability challenges,” he says.
Although donkey meat is still considered unconventional by many, Gabo notes that attitudes are gradually changing as people become more open-minded about different food choices.
“People are slowly getting used to the idea. At first they are hesitant, but once they try it, many are surprised by the taste and quality,” he adds.
