Harare, (New Ziana) – Harare municipal authorities said on Wednesday a scabies outbreak had been registered in the city’s Hopley and Stoneridge suburbs, as well as surrounding communities, with most cases reported among children under 12 years.

The outbreak was first detected in mid last month, the city’s Health Department said in a statement.

“The City of Harare Health Department wishes to inform residents of Hopley, Stoneridge and surrounding communities of a scabies outbreak that was first detected in mid-June 2026. The majority of reported cases are among children below the age of 12 years,” it said.

Scabies is a highly contagious skin condition caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the skin and it spreads mainly through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and by sharing infested clothing, bedding, and towels.

Common symptoms include intense itching, especially at night, skin rashes, and sores caused by scratching that can lead to secondary bacterial infections.

The disease spreads mainly through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and by sharing infested clothing, bedding, and towels.

“Residents who experience persistent itching, skin rashes, or other symptoms consistent with scabies are strongly encouraged to seek prompt medical attention at their nearest health facility,” the department said.

The department said early diagnosis and treatment are critical to stop further spread adding, “household members and close contacts of confirmed cases should also be assessed and treated to prevent re-infestation”.

In response, the City of Harare said it has activated outbreak measures that include enhanced disease surveillance, case management, health education, and community awareness campaigns.

“Health teams are working closely with affected communities to contain the outbreak and prevent further transmission. The City of Harare urges all residents to cooperate with health personnel and adhere to the public health guidance provided by the rapid response teams,” it said.

“To reduce the risk of transmission, the public is advised to maintain good personal hygiene, avoid sharing personal items, wash bedding and clothing in hot water, and complete prescribed treatment,” it added.

The department said it has also activated outbreak response measures, including enhanced disease surveillance, case management, health education, and community awareness campaigns.

“For further information or assistance, members of the public are advised to visit their nearest City of Harare clinic or health facility,” it said.
