HARARE – The Grain Marketing Board (GMB) has announced new grain purchase prices while committing itself to pay farmers on time.
In a statement on Thursday, the GMB said it will buy both maize and traditional grains at US$364.75 per tonne, a move aimed at strengthening farmer confidence and supporting preparations for the next cropping season.
The Board said the prices are above prevailing market rates and reflect the Government’s commitment to supporting agriculture, which remains a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s economy.
“GMB prices are above the market as they reinforce confidence and guarantee farmers to mobilise input resources for the next cropping season, underscoring Government’s steadfast commitment to agriculture — a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s economy,” the Board said.
GMB encouraged farmers to deliver their grain through its nationwide network of 89 depots and 1 804 ward-based buying points, adding that transport logistics are available to assist producers in delivering their harvest.
The Board said farmers can also access grain swap facilities and agricultural inputs at its depots and buying points, while timely payments will continue to be made.
It reiterated that it remains the buyer of last resort, assuring all farmers, including self-financed producers and those who fail to secure alternative markets, that they can deliver their grain to GMB.
“As the nation’s trusted grain custodian, GMB remains dedicated to partnering with farmers to achieve grain self-sufficiency and food security for Zimbabwe,” the statement said.
