MBALABALA — Several Highlanders Football Club supporters are feared to have died following a road accident near Mbalabala along the Bulawayo-Gwanda Highway on Sunday night.
The accident occurred as the supporters were reportedly travelling home after attending Highlanders’ Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match against Herentals at Barbourfields Stadium.
Details of the accident remained sketchy by the time of publication, with the number of people involved and the extent of the casualties yet to be officially confirmed.
The vehicle carrying the supporters reportedly crashed near Mbalabala, raising fears of fatalities and injuries.
Police were said to have attended the scene as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident got underway.
The incident comes barely a month after Highlanders lost four members of its family in a road accident along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
Those killed in the July accident were Highlanders chairman Retired Colonel Kenneth Mhlophe, vice-chairman Sifiso Siziba, finance executive Nkani Khoza and supporter Mbalenhle Sibanda.
The latest accident has heightened concern within the Highlanders family, which was still mourning the loss of its members.
Further details on the Mbalabala accident were expected from the police and other authorities as investigations continued.
