MUTARE—Four people are feared dead, and several others were seriously injured following a road traffic accident along Mutare-Chigodora Road late Monday afternoon.

The crash occurred just after Prince of Wales View and involved a commuter omnibus and a Nissan AD van.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the accident and said the kombi driver allegedly overtook other vehicles at a curve before side-swiping the AD van. The impact caused the kombi to veer off the road and plunge into a ditch.

“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident in which four people were killed after a commuter omnibus side-swiped an AD van and veered off the road near Prince of Wales along Mutare-Chigodora Road. The driver is said to have overtaken other vehicles at a curve and side-swiped an AD van before veering off the road,” police said.

According to witnesses at the scene, the collision happened in the late afternoon. Police and emergency services attended and rushed the injured to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.

The exact number of injured people is yet to be established. Police said more details will be released in due course.

By the time of publication, police had not released official details on the identities of the deceased or the full cause of the accident.

Witnesses said the kombi left the road after the collision and landed in a ditch, prompting a response from emergency crews.

The Mutare-Chigodora Road is a busy route linking the city to surrounding communities and has seen several accidents in recent months. Authorities have previously urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when overtaking on curves.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
