KAROI — A 39-year-old man has been jailed for 12 months and banned from driving Class 2 vehicles for life after a breathalyser test found him driving with alcohol levels significantly above the legal limit.
The accused, Blessing Dzapasi of Claudia, Karoi, was found guilty and convicted at the Karoi Magistrates’ Court for driving under the influence of alcohol.
This conviction was for contravening Section 54(2) of the Road Traffic Act [Chapter 13:11], which prohibits driving with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the stipulated limit.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the offence occurred on August 19 at the 204-kilometre peg along the Harare-Chirundu Road.
Dzapasi was driving a Mitsubishi Canter towards Chirundu with two passengers when ZRP traffic officers stopped him during a routine enforcement operation.
“The officers suspected he was under the influence of alcohol, and a subsequent breathalyser test recorded 114mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, well above the prescribed legal limit of 80mg/100ml,” said NPAZ.
Meanwhile, the NPAZ urged motorists to make responsible choices and to never get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.
“This sentence serves as a reminder that driving under the influence of alcohol is not only illegal but also dangerous, placing at risk the lives of passengers, fellow motorists, and pedestrians alike,” said the authority.
