KELVIN Kaindu returns to familiar territory today when his ambitious Hardrock FC side visits Barbourfields Stadium to face former club Highlanders in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League Matchday 29 encounter, with the Kwekwe miners looking to keep their title challenge firmly on track.
The 2026 campaign has turned into a remarkable one for Hardrock, who are fighting for honours in their debut season in the top flight. With the championship race entering its decisive stages, every point has assumed greater significance for Kaindu’s men.
But Saturday’s encounter carries an added personal dimension for the Hardrock coach, who knows the Highlanders environment intimately, having both played for Bosso and occupied the club’s dugout.
Kaindu is therefore returning to a stadium where he understands the expectations, passion and pressure that come with representing one of Zimbabwe’s biggest football institutions.
“Every game is important. We know how strong Bosso is with the support from their fans. They are coming from a win and are motivated. We are taking every game at a time,” Kaindu said ahead of the encounter.
The match also presents Hardrock with an opportunity to avenge their first-round defeat to Highlanders.
Bosso stunned Hardrock 1-0 at Chahwanda Stadium in May, with Reason Sibanda scoring the decisive goal late in the second half to hand the miners their first home defeat since gaining promotion to the PSL.
That result remains one of the few blemishes on Hardrock’s otherwise impressive home campaign and Kaindu will be hoping his charges can turn the tables in Bulawayo.
Hardrock will arrive in high spirits after producing arguably their biggest result of the season so far, eliminating defending champions Scottland 1-0 in the Chibuku Super Cup quarter-finals at Rufaro Stadium on Wednesday.
Neliswa “Tiger” Dlamini’s 14th-minute strike was enough to send Hardrock into the semi-finals, where they will meet FC Hunters.
The victory extended Hardrock’s unbeaten run and provided another indication of their growing confidence under Kaindu.
The coach’s credentials were already recognised earlier in the season when he was named the Castle Lager PSL Coach of the Month for April after guiding Hardrock through an unbeaten month featuring three wins and two draws.
Kaindu was also named Coach of the Month for August after leading Hardrock to league victories over Manica Diamonds and FC Hunters, alongside their Chibuku Super Cup progress.
The coach has built a squad with considerable experience and attacking quality, including former Highlanders forward Prince Dube, while Warriors international Gerald Takwara has added experience at the back.
However, Takwara will miss Saturday’s showdown through suspension after being included among the players ruled out for Matchday 29.
There is also uncertainty surrounding leading scorer Washington Navaya, who was taken to hospital during Hardrock’s recent clash with Scottland. His availability will be closely watched as the miners prepare for another demanding assignment.
Navaya has been central to Hardrock’s campaign and was rewarded with the July PSL Player of the Month award after a productive spell that included a goal and two assists in the 3-3 draw against CAPS United, before scoring from the penalty spot against Herentals.
Another intriguing subplot is Mongameli Tshuma.
The Highlanders midfielder has already agreed to join Hardrock, although he will remain with Bosso for the rest of the 2026 season before the move officially takes effect on January 1, 2027. Highlanders confirmed the agreement in August.
Tshuma’s future allegiance adds another layer of intrigue to a fixture in which Hardrock’s ambitions will collide with Highlanders’ desire to protect their home turf.
Hardrock’s recent form has underlined their credentials as genuine contenders. They hammered TelOne 4-1 at Chahwanda earlier this month before eliminating Scottland, while their league run has kept them within touching distance of the leaders.
Now Kaindu must negotiate a difficult turnaround — from Wednesday’s emotionally charged cup triumph against Scottland to Saturday’s demanding league assignment at Barbourfields.
For Highlanders, the fixture is equally significant, with Bosso looking to build on their recent momentum and prevent Hardrock from gaining another crucial advantage in the championship race.
With Kaindu returning to his old hunting ground, Hardrock chasing revenge for the Chahwanda defeat, Tshuma facing his future employers and the visitors carrying the confidence of eliminating Scottland, Barbourfields promises another intriguing chapter in what has become one of the most competitive PSL title races in recent years.
