HARARE — Cinema provided a platform for cultural exchange in Harare on Sunday when the GlobUs International Association launched its film club in Zimbabwe with a screening of The Last Warrior, bringing together about 30 local residents and friends of the association.
The September 20 event combined film and dialogue, with participants engaging in a post-screening discussion that explored similarities and differences between cultures, particularly the ways in which communities preserve traditions and family identity.
A key focus of the discussion was the significance of totems, which continue to play an important role in defining family lineage and cultural identity.
Participants reflected on how traditional practices have evolved over time, particularly among younger generations, while noting that respect for family customs and ancestral heritage remains strong.
“Of course, young people today have somewhat reinterpreted these traditions. While strictly refraining from eating the meat of one’s totem animal was once the rule, that is changing now. Yet we still honour family customs and treat our lineage and totems with respect, refusing to let that part of us be taken away,” one of the guests said.
The discussion demonstrated how cultural practices can differ in their expression while retaining common values, including respect for family, heritage and identity.
The screening also highlighted the role of film as a bridge between people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
Despite differences in languages, traditions and storytelling, participants found common ground in their shared interest in learning about one another’s cultures.
The GlobUs film club’s inaugural screening in Harare therefore went beyond entertainment, creating an informal space where participants could exchange ideas, reflect on their respective cultural traditions and deepen mutual understanding.
The warm reception of the inaugural event marked the beginning of what GlobUs hopes will be a continuing platform for cultural dialogue through cinema in Zimbabwe.
