CHINHOYI — What began as a routine journey home ended in tragedy for 55-year-old Daniel Chaparira, a ZESA employee from Chinhoyi, who lost his life in a fatal head-on collision along the Harare-Chirundu Road recently.
According to reports, Chaparira, who resided in Ruvimbo, Chinhoyi, was driving an Isuzu D-Max towards Chinhoyi when he attempted to swerve away from a fire burning along the roadside near the 188-kilometre peg.
In the process, his vehicle veered into the path of an oncoming Volvo FH haulage truck heading towards Karoi, resulting in a violent head-on collision around 12:40 pm.
Chaparira and his two passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to Karoi Medscape Surgery. Sadly, Chaparira succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
One passenger was treated and discharged, while the other remained in hospital for further care. The haulage truck driver, who was travelling alone, escaped unhurt. Both vehicles suffered extensive front-end damage in the collision.
Mashonaland West Police Spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching roadside fires and other hazards.
He said motorists should maintain a proper lookout and avoid manoeuvres that could expose them to oncoming traffic.
“Motorists should always exercise caution and remain vigilant to prevent the loss of life and property in situations that can often be avoided,” he said.
