HARARE — Zimbabwe Women etched their names into the history books on Sunday after securing their maiden ICC Women’s Championship victory with a commanding four-wicket win over the West Indies at Harare Sports Club.
The historic triumph came in the second ODI of the three-match series, with Zimbabwe successfully chasing down a modest target of 140 after bowling out the visitors for 139 in 39.3 overs.
It was a landmark moment for Zimbabwe, who are competing in the ICC Women’s Championship for the first time following their inclusion in the expanded 11-team 2025–2029 cycle, which serves as the qualification pathway for the 2029 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup.
Zimbabwe entered the West Indies series without a Championship victory, having lost their opening six matches of the current cycle. The hosts had also suffered a 99-run defeat in the opening ODI on September 24, when West Indies captain Hayley Matthews smashed a record 182.
However, Josephine Nkomo’s side responded impressively on Sunday, producing a disciplined bowling performance before completing a composed run chase.
Nyasha Gwanzura was the star with the ball, claiming four wickets for 33 runs from her 10 overs as Zimbabwe repeatedly disrupted the West Indies batting line-up.
Michelle Mavunga provided excellent support with three wickets, while Francisca Chipare and Olinder Chare also contributed to restricting the visitors to 139.
Stafanie Taylor offered the strongest resistance for the West Indies, scoring 47 from 68 deliveries, while Matthews contributed 26 before falling to Gwanzura.
Zimbabwe then began their chase cautiously, with Modester Mupachikwa anchoring the innings with a valuable 38 from 57 balls.
Mupachikwa combined with Kelis Ndhlovu, who scored 30, to establish a solid platform before Zimbabwe experienced a brief wobble in the middle order.
Captain Nkomo then produced a composed 30 to steady the innings, while Gwanzura completed a memorable all-round performance by remaining unbeaten on 18 as Zimbabwe reached 140 for six in 40.5 overs.
The victory was Zimbabwe’s first in the ICC Women’s Championship since their debut in the competition and earned them two valuable points in the 2025–2029 cycle. Under the Championship format, teams receive two points for a win and one point for a tie, no-result or abandoned match.
The result also levelled the three-match ODI series at 1-1, setting up a potentially decisive final encounter at Harare Sports Club on September 30.
The series is part of a wider six-match white-ball tour, with the three ODIs forming part of the Women’s Championship before the teams move to Takashinga Cricket Club for three T20Is from October 3 to 7.
For Zimbabwe, however, the significance of Sunday’s victory goes beyond the series scoreline.
After defeats in New Zealand and Pakistan earlier in the Championship campaign, the home success provides the team with its first taste of victory in the competition and a major confidence boost as the road to the 2029 Women’s Cricket World Cup continues.
Zimbabwe’s historic win also came against a West Indies side that arrived in Harare ranked fifth in the Championship standings, having won four of their previous nine matches.
With one ODI still to play, Zimbabwe now have an opportunity to build on their breakthrough victory and finish the series on a strong note.
