HARARE — The Zimbabwe Republic Police have stepped up efforts to improve road safety and combat crime by deploying additional highway patrol vehicles and motorcycles across the country.
The latest batch of vehicles and motorcycles was commissioned in Harare on Monday by Police Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba as part of efforts to strengthen policing on major highways and other areas.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the new equipment would enhance the police’s capacity to monitor traffic, respond to incidents, and tackle criminal activities.
“Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba has released another batch of highway patrol vehicles and motorbikes to enable the country’s roads and highways to be policed,” he said.
“The vehicles will assist in monitoring traffic and criminal activities throughout the country.”
The latest deployment comes as police intensify measures to curb reckless driving and road traffic offences, which continue to pose a challenge on the country’s roads.
The motorcycles, designed for all-terrain operations, will also support policing in urban centres, rural communities, and areas that conventional vehicles may have difficulty accessing.
According to the police, the motorcycles are expected to assist officers with scene attendance, crime management, general and specific patrols, and enforcement against dangerous driving.
The latest equipment builds on earlier deployments made this year, including additional motorcycles, patrol vehicles, and boats acquired to improve police operations and emergency response.
The equipment has been distributed to various provinces and police stations to strengthen rapid response, particularly in farming communities, rural areas, central business districts, and other hard-to-reach locations.
The police have also been expanding specialised capabilities, including deploying equipment for the Police Canine Unit to support crime detection, suspect tracking, drug detection, and searches during public order operations.
In addition, the National Highway Patrol Unit has received three more vehicles to bolster its operations on the country’s major roads.
Nyathi urged members of the public to cooperate with the police and other law enforcement agencies as authorities intensify efforts to improve road safety and combat crime.
Continued investment in patrol equipment is expected to improve police visibility and response times while strengthening enforcement on highways and within communities.
