Masvingo, (New Ziana) – Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds have ripped off the roofs of several schools in Zaka, and other areas in Masvongo, leaving students and families stranded.

Masvingo province, which often suffers drought, has this year experienced heavy rains which flooded streets in Masvingo city and blew off roofs of several houses and churches last week.

Six schools in Zaka – namely Machiva, Manjeru, Chitende, Mafuratidze, Govo and Danda – were similarly affected by the windy storms, with roofs being blown off.

There are no reports of death or injuries.

At Chingwizi, a settlement in the province set up to accommodate people relocated from Tokwe-Mukosi to pave way for the construction of a dam, community leaders said over 15 houses and church structures were damaged by the violent storms sweeping the province.

Reports said several other schools in Zaka district also suffered minor damage, but much of the destruction has occurred in Masvingo city.

Here, several houses and church buildings had their roofs blown off in the windy storms, but no deaths or injuries were reported.

One vehicle was swept away in the city when it tried to cross a flooded river.
