Advice for livestock farmers

Share

THE heat during summer can be a major challenge for livestock and farmers should
strive to take care of their animals so that they are in good condition.
During this time of the year, there are problems of veld fires encountered, which end up
killing the livestock at the same time creating a shortage of pastures.
In notifying farmers to look out for their livestock, Mashonaland West Acting Provincial
Agritex Director, Evelyn Ndoro, said they encourage farmers to make sure their
livestock are healthy and productive.
“During this time of the year, we experience a number of veld fires and they do affect
our livestock initially, cattle, goats and sheep which depend on veld. So, we encourage
people to get into supplementary feeding so that they keep their animals in condition,”
said Ndoro.
Farmers, especially in the small holder sector should monitor their animals for signs of
heat stress as they experience hot weather.
“We are seeing that some of our water sources are drying up such that livestock,
especially those in the small holder sector go for long distances to fetch water for their
livestock to drink. Because of that, animals may suffer heat stress and farmers should
be wary of that especially for cattle because we need them for draught power for tillage.
“We should also, by all means, try to avoid working animals during the hot weather. If
possible, farmers should avoid working their animals during the hottest part of the day,”
she said.
Farmers should also vaccinate their livestock against common diseases and seek
veterinary care whenever necessary.
“As farmers, we need to vaccinate our animals against the common diseases as
vaccination protects animals from diseases that can make them more susceptible to
heat stress. We should also monitor any signs of injury or illness and if an animal
encounters that, it is important to seek veterinary care promptly,” advised Ndoro.
By taking the required steps and following veterinary advice, farmers can help ensure
that their livestock is always healthy and productive.
