Air Zim in ambitious 2021 plan

Harare, (New Ziana) – National airline, Air Zimbabwe on Wednesday announced an ambitious 2021 plan to bolster its operations through new aircraft acquisition and expansion of routes.

The perennially struggling carier, which is currently under judicial management to protect it from insolvency, said it was in the process of acquiring a second Embraer jet.

The airline’s acting chief executive Joseph Makonise described 2020 as a tumultuous year that had seen the industry being grounded due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

“Our focus for 2021 is fleet augmentation, route expansion and service delivery,” he said.

“We have resumed domestic operations albeit on a limited schedule as we continue to monitor the trajectory of the second wave of the pandemic within the confines of the recently announced new lockdown restrictions.”

The airline, he said, was expecting its recently purchased Embraer jet to be in the skies before the end of this month, with expectations to acquire another in the first half of the year.

The new plane will allow the airline to boost its presence on both the domestic and regional markets with the introduction of daily flights between Harare and Johannesburg and four times weekly between Bulawayo and Johannesburg.

“Regional expansion is poised with the proposed addition of Lusaka, Lubumbashi and Kinshasa destinations as the year progresses,” Makonise said.
