Ran Mines, a key player in Zimbabwe’s mining sector, has faced another major setback as it struggles to reestablish operations following its much-anticipated reopening.

In the latest incident, four artisans employed by a contractor sustained serious burns after gas bottles in a room they were working in ignited and exploded. The workers were providing services at the mine’s plant when the accident occurred.

Jack Murehwa, Corporate Affairs Director for Ran Mines, confirmed the incident.

“An incident occurred involving employees of a contractor hired to provide services at the plant, resulting in superficial burns to their faces and arms,” said Murewha.

He added that the mine responded swiftly, administering first aid and evacuating the injured to a medical facility in Bindura.

“Together with the contractor, we have continued to support the injured employees throughout their recovery,” he said.

This accident is the latest in a series of safety-related incidents that have raised concerns about the mine’s operational protocols.

Since reopening, Ran Mines has been under scrutiny for recurring safety issues, prompting calls for stricter adherence to safety standards.

Despite the setbacks, Murehwa reaffirmed the mine’s commitment to employee welfare and operational safety.

“Safety is our top priority, and we take it very seriously,” he said. “We have taken all necessary steps to investigate the cause of this incident and to implement measures that will prevent a recurrence.”

A production update is expected before the end of the year, and the company is confident in its ability to meet targets.
