LONDON — Arsenal made a powerful statement ahead of the new Premier League season after sweeping aside Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Sunday.

The victory gave the reigning English champions an early psychological boost as they prepare to defend their Premier League crown, while handing new Manchester City coach Enzo Maresca a sobering introduction to the challenge ahead.

Arsenal needed just 24 seconds to take the lead, with Riccardo Calafiori finishing calmly after being played through by teenage midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The early goal unsettled City, who struggled to match Arsenal’s intensity and organisation.

Arsenal doubled their advantage in the 27th minute when Christos Tzolis headed Martin Odegaard’s cross back into the danger area, allowing Kai Havertz to rise above Ruben Dias and head home.

City, who have dominated English football for much of the past decade, failed to find a response as Arsenal continued to control proceedings.

Captain Odegaard then put the result beyond doubt three minutes into the second half, combining with Tzolis before weaving through the City defence and finishing at close range.

The result marked a convincing start to Arsenal’s campaign as they seek to become the first club in decades to retain the Premier League title in successive seasons.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had used the Community Shield to give some of his new players an opportunity to settle into the team, with the newcomers showing encouraging signs ahead of the league campaign.

The victory also underlined Arsenal’s determination to build on last season’s success after their painful Champions League final defeat by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.

For City, however, the defeat exposed several weaknesses as Maresca begins his tenure following Pep Guardiola’s departure.

Guardiola leaves Manchester City after a hugely successful spell that yielded 20 major trophies, but the club have not won the Premier League since 2024 and finished second behind Arsenal last season.

City will now have to regroup before opening their league campaign against Bournemouth on August 23, while Arsenal welcome promoted Coventry to the Emirates Stadium on August 21.

Arsenal’s emphatic performance will undoubtedly raise expectations that the Gunners could be entering a sustained period of dominance, although the Community Shield remains only a curtain-raiser to the long Premier League campaign ahead.
